You’ll begin your visit by wandering the staterooms – be sure to pay close attention to the tapestries that adorn the walls. The skilled needlework draws a vivid image of the palace history, as well as playing an important role in keeping the palace warm.

As well as tapestries, you’ll see many paintings during your visit. These often depict historical figures and events and offer a detailed insight into Scotland’s past. There are beautiful objects wherever you look, including the finest china and opulent fabrics.

The Palace of Holyroodhouse has some magnificent artwork ceilings to admire. The carved plasterwork in the ceiling of the King’s bed-chamber in the East Wing is particularly impressive.

The Great Gallery is one of the must-sees at the Palace of Holyroodhouse. The walls groan with paintings of over 100 Scottish rulers and it has played a hugely important role in Scottish political and courtly life. Nowadays it is mostly used for grand banquets, where fine foods are served under the watchful eye of history.

Mary Queen of Scots

Much of the palace you’ll see today dates from the seventeenth century, but if you head to the Northwest Tower you can see the space where Mary Queen of Scots took residence. This includes the location of some of the more grisly aspects of her reign, including the murder of her secretary David Rizzio, an act orchestrated by her husband, Lord Darnley.

This part of the palace is steeped in history, with wooden panels and aged floorboards, as well as fascinating exhibitions of clothing and jewellery from this turbulent time.

As well as enjoying the history and grandeur of the palace, do remember to step out to soak up the beauty of the gardens. Depending on the season you’ll see all manner of Scottish flora, including a marvellous rose collection, all laid out in the style of a formal garden.
